About twelve years ago, a friend who’s an amazing crafter introduced me to leather crafts. That was B.I. (Before Internet), so I learnt the traditional ways from her. She taught me to sew it, tool it and dye it along a whole week workshop that was one of the most wonderful crafting experiences I have ever had, and one of the main reasons that I am a crafter myself. By that time, I was pretty poor and supplies were very hard to find so I couldn’t make much more for several years; luckily that has changed, and since Fernando wanted to learn about it, I took out my leather supplies (recently upgraded by an awesome friend who gave me a bag of really beautiful leather scraps) and started designing pieces for the shop.

Each one of these pieces is unique and won’t be repeated, though I am open to recreate them once sold; they are made in cowhide leather of first quality, unused. They are handsewn and handpainted, using motifs inspired in English 17th century embroidery and woodwork. The paint has been sealed, but it is not waterproof, so be gentle to them :). These are perfect for gemstones, small bottles, amulets, relics, etc. They measure 8 (at widest point) x 9 cms; that is 3,1 x 3,5 inches. The string for closure is handcut of the same type of leather, and each pouch in this series feature a cowrie shell wrapped in copper, as a symbol of abundance and good luck.

We have more pieces in the making that you will be seeing shortly :). You can find these pouches at The Hoodoo Shop at Etsy.

The Ghost Rose – Handpainted OOAK Altar Dish & Spoon

I love victorian style rose prints, and there isn’t a room in my house that does not have one of those gorgeous victorian floral prints – it is only natural that some rose are showing up on this collection of handpainted kitchen ornaments.
These pieces are sold separately.

Santa Muerte Altar Talisman

Evil Eye Protection Altar Talisman

Handpainted OOAK altar talismans; each slice measures around 4,5 – 5 cms/ 1,75 – 2 inches, due to the natural form of the trunk, and some have the bark and some don’t, depending on the bark’s resistance to breakage after cutting the slices. The back is painted black but the sides were left in its natural colour and texture; the whole piece was varnished with a soft satin water varnish to add durability and avoid scratching, and a small leather cord hanger was glued.

You can find all these items at The Hoodoo Shop at Etsy.

Shangó, Orisha of fire, Maker of Justice and patron of music and dance, is a complex archetype as he is the Sacred Male Principle (so used in love spells) and the Judge of human acts (also used in justice spells). A protective, loving Orisha that is pleased by dancing and singing before him. Apples, watermelon and tomatoes are some of his favourite offerings, but also rum and cigars as Eleggua. He provides karma and brings back the good and bad we have made.He is portrayed in this painting with his double-side axe, his sacred tool for imparting Justice, and the jeweled gold crown that is part of the traditional African idol.

This painting was made as a custom order, so the original is reserved. The original piece was made in acrylic on canvas. No digital editing done except for adjusting colour balances as close as possible to the original drawing. 10×15 cms/ 4×6 inches, printed in high quality photographic paper, with enough border on all sides for framing. All prints will be numbered and signed by me. All prints come with a regular size white envelope.

You can find this print at The Hoodoo Shop at Etsy.

For the Guanches, the mountain range of Anaga in Tenerife was the Land Of The Dead; more specifically, the mount of Las Mercedes. We go regularly to this mount to offer our respect and offerings for our ancestors. Since it is a protected area, we only wildharvest plants and other elements in really small amounts. Each bottle contains a small bit of moss collected at the mountain of Las Mercedes on the day of Samhain two years ago.

These bottles have been customized by me using vintage brass findings, skull beads and gorgeous faceted glass rondelle beads; one in Aurora Borealis colour, another in Vermillion Red and another in Jet Black. The pendant measures 6,5 cms/2,2 inches tall. The cork is not glued, in case you want to add your favourite ancestor oil or other herbs or charms. If you want me to glue the cork, just let me know. Each bottle comes with a 60 cms/ 23 inches black leather cord. Only one of each available.

You can find these bottle charms at The Hoodoo Shop at Etsy.

Our friends from Estonia left last night – taking our hearts and many goodbye tears. We are already missing them, but as cliche as it may be, life goes on and we have to go back to our regular life, something we are thankful for too; it is easy to go back to a life and a work you love (and even need) so much.

I have had a lot of time to think about our work this week, and about how I would like it to be in ten years from now. I have made long-term and short-term decisions, and being almost away for one week has been great in terms of putting everything in perspective and refining our vision of what we’d like our work to be. Definitely all the fresh air that we’ve been taking has been a big aid :).

My first short-term decision has been to put the Tarot readings and the Spellwork on a longer hiatus. Right now, I don’t know if I will make them available again. The feeling of peace that this decision has left inside me is way bigger than the economic profit I make from them; I thought I was just tired, but I have seen that, in truth, I don’t like making readings or spellwork on a custom work basis. It may not be for me – you must understand that I started reading cards when I was 13, and by that time I was not so aware of the consequences of my choices; when I was in my 20′s it was just a way of earning a life, at a time when I had no choice but doing anything to survive. But at this point in my life, only god(dess) knows why, I feel like I should start making choices and meditating deeply about what I want to let go of, so I can make space to grow. I am making a serious life weeding, taking away anything that steals my attention from the only truth I know about myself – that I cannot live without creating.

As I said in a previous post, this is not about burning bridges; the shop will stay open and we will continue to offer new products continuously as we have been making in the past – but as we evolve and change, our creations do evolve too. We have both noticed that we want to focus more on religious/spiritual art and handmade tools and less on “everyday Witchcraft” products like oils and powders, offering a more unique and special array of goods, while keeping our best selling handmade products. We have several ideas for small collections that we will be presenting soon; for starters, I am working on a new series of deluxe altar dolls… but more on that tomorrow!
