Last Post Of 2010

Sorry for the blog absence in the past days – in Spain, the gift giving craziness has just started as we celebrate the Three Wizard King’s day on January 6; so, we have customers and friends coming to purchase jewelry and magickal stuff to give on that day, and we have been ultra busy :).

Thinking that this is the last post of this year puts me in a reflective mood for a moment, and makes me wish I had a little more time to write a beautiful, insightful post on what 2010 has been for us – as every year, there have been many low and high points to reflect about. Events through the year have taught me to have a little less faith in others, but a lot more faith in ourselves. We’re still just as broke as in 2009, but we’re closer to self-sufficiency than a year ago. We have passed the 1000 sale Etsy milestone, but we have also had to deal with new shops ripping off our ideas time and time again. I didn’t meet half of my 2009 resolutions, like making more time for dollmaking, but I reached goals that I thought were unreachable, like having one of my photographs bought for a book on Voodoo. I am very satisfied that this year I have improved my painting skills more than ever in my life, but I have not had the time to work on a thousand other crafts that I’d love to explore much more, like leatherwork, spinning or sculpting. I finished our first ezine, but now I’m wondering when I’ll have time to work on issue #2. 2010, as I’m saying goodbye to you, I am also saying Thank You and I Loved It. It was a great ride, and I hope 2011 is just as fun! To all our readers, friends, customers and followers worlwide – Happy New Year! Cliché as it may be, our adventure wouldn’t be possible without all of you – thanks so much for being there!!!

Handcarved Crochet Hooks – 5 mm,US H/8, UK 6 size.
Completely handcarved by Fernando without the use of any electrical tools, made from pine wood. Handpainted and polished with organic beeswax, which preserves and softens the wood. The piece of crochet was actually made using one of them, so you can get a better idea of the stitch size. Excellent for thick yarns, handspun yarns, novelty yarns and for beginner/child crocheters.

Handcarved Altar Box
Completely handcarved and built by Fernando without the use of any electrical tools from a piece of Peruvian Pepper Tree wood, salvaged from the yearly pruning – no trees harmed! This tree lives happy in his parents’ farm :). Perfect for small stones, seeds, bones, dry insects, crystals, etc. One of a kind!
Measures:
- Length: 7,5 cms – 3 inches
- Width: 5,5 cms – 2 inches
- Heigth: 4,5 cms – 1,75 inches.

Wildharvesting Crocheted Pouches
Net-like crochet is very useful for keeping and drying stuff that needs airing, to prevent mold and humidity. Many times we wildharvest nuts, big seeds, berries, small branches, etc – they need to dry for several days. You can use drying trays, or you can use this bags! They save up LOTS of space on our Witch room, just hanging beside the herbs. Organic cotton is ultra absorbent and super easy to wash, does not shrink and doesn’t need pressing – can’t get easier than that! Bags measure 10×17 cms/4×7 inches and have a braided cotton cord with wooden bead toppers for closure. As a size example – I’ve filled each bag with 15 nuts.

Also, we have started a new promotion! With each order (except digital items of course) and until supplies last, we will give away one tea bag filled with our Selene tea – a super relaxing blend for a good night’s sleep, or simply for when life is too much :).
Find all these items at The Hoodoo Shop.

Fernando went yesterday to Anaga to spend the day with his parents, and took these beautiful pictures. These places were his playground when he was little.

We will be back on Monday – for all those of you who celebrate it, Merry Christmas!

First of all, let me wish a Happy Solstice to all our readers, friends, customers, lurkers and enemies! May this day be filled with blessings, despite the eclipse craziness, mercury retrograde and the Christmas frenzy!
As we intended, we prepared offerings, made a Jumbo candle and even soap! As you can imagine I don’t have much time for long posts today as I have a ton of work ahead, both for the celebration and for the shop, so I’m leaving you with some eye candy- enjoy!

The whole wiew.

XXXL candle – 7,4 inches tall and 620 gr. of wax and oils (620 gr = 1,3 pounds).

Fruits and homemade lemon rind cake.

Fernando finished this lovely box made from a piece of the Peruvian Pepper tree (Schinus Molle) – there is one on his parent’s crops and last year he salvaged several branches from the yearly pruning. We will leave it at the altar a couple of days so it gets extra blessing and then we will list it at the shop.

1500 gr (3,3 pounds) of herbal soap made last night – a simple recipe made with sunflower seed oil, enhanced with powdered seaweed, perfumed with aniseed and lemongrass essential oils, and powdered on the top with chamomile, calendula and spearmint from our garden. It will be ready to be used just in time for gift giving on the Three King’s Day (Jan.6).

More tomorrow – have a wonderful day!

For us, celebrating sacred days is more of a mood than a specific ritual – Winter Solstice is the week of the God, the week we celebrate his power and fertility. Our winter is not white – it is green, the greener this desert islands get, so for us the God is abundance, the time when the landscape shows all its beauty. We usually start the devotions of the week by constructing an altar; again, it’s a different one every time. I’m really happy with this year’s altar, and for once, I remembered to leave free space for the offerings :D – we always end up placing the offering on a table under the altar. Food offerings will be placed tomorrow, so hopefully today we will be able to make some good ol’ phallic candles.

Candle work for a dear customer and friend. Working with Ochum this time, hence the dryad painting on the back.

I made my first pair of crocheted mittens – not that they will be much used here ;) , but I’m making a couple of pairs as gifts for friends in colder climates, and for our lovely mail woman who goes beyond duty for bringing our mail, and is an example of a hard working woman and mother.

We finished painting the spinning wheel – I cannot tell you how much I love it! The choice of black was not only because of the gypsy gorgeousness (which was reason enough for me), but also because a black background will give me a better view of threads as I spin. Any other colour choice would have ended clashing with a thread’s colour, and if you know anything about colour, you’ll know that when you change the background of a painting, all the other colours are perceived differently. And well, now I want to paint all furniture like this hehe…

Lucky Rooster

The rooster has been considered a guardian spirit since antiquity, hence the use of its symbol for protection of the household. This piece has been painted with a deep pine green on the back and sides, and a warm Iron Orange on the front. The scroll on the spoon’s neck is adorned with a poppy and two stalls of wheat, also symbols of good luck and protection.

Winter Spirit

Winter Spirits live in the wind, the snow and the darkness of winter, caring for the silent forest and the frozen waters…
This piece has been painted with a deep cyan blue on the back and sides, and a soft blue grey on the front. The scroll on the spoon’s neck is adorned with an Iris flower, symbol of purity and spirituality.

29 cms/11,5 inches long. Each piece has a hole on the upper part for hanging and is varnished with a soft satin water varnish to add durability and for easier cleaning.
Find them at The Hoodoo Shop.
