Archive for February, 2011

This week we have received two bad news – one that affects all green lovers in Europe, and one that affects only to our shop. The first one is that, after April 1, selling herbs and herbal medicines will be illegal in Europe, giving the big pharmaceutical devils all the power and taking in all from the people. The anarchist in me is boiling, and by no means I will stop growing, using or selling herbs, but that may affect Etsy’s regulations about it and, when that happens, we’ll have no choice but taking all herbal products away from the shop. Don’t worry, you will still buy them directly from me, because as I said no-one is going to tell me what can I do with what I grow on my garden.

Second new-that-sucks, our supply of bottles is almost over, and the supplier can’t get us more. The economic crisis in Spain is growing every day! We are looking for another source already, but we can’t promise we will have the funds to order bottles as all I’ve found is in the UK, and that means huge shipping costs. So, purchase your oils and waters while you can, because we may be discontinuing many products in the near future.

To me, all these are signs of change in our direction, and change doesn’t worry me. I’m only worried about all the small businesses that will become illegal and about the unemployment that could bring (as if we needed it right now!), but not about us. We’re working on a small website in Spanish for our dolls, very much an online portfolio for our local customers, and I am preparing a new batch of porcelain dolls to sell; Spain is a country of doll lovers and miniaturists, and I think it’s time to take a leap of faith and think that while some doors may be closing, it may the time to go and open new doors, conjure new doors, create new doors – or simply, forget about doors.

Quilted tablecloth, completely handsewn – my first. A gift for my mother in law for Mother’s day. Being left-handed, dyslexic andd too poor for a cutting mat, I had always avoided quilting because the idea of cutting a ton of squares by hand was one of my personal circles of hell :). By chance, I found a quilting shop at Etsy that sold pre-cut squares and was having a sale, so I purchased a couple of very affordable square sets – and I am really loving it. Its simplicity, and the meditative state that handsewing these bring have captivated me completely. The more I learn about textiles and sewing, the more I’m loving the simplest, most minimalist works like this one. Get ready for some more quilting in this blog’s future.

Candle work for a customer – I don’t know why, but this candle gathered an astounding amount of energy. I have done so much of it this year, and I never thought I would enjoy it as I have, considering how I’ve loathed repeating work in the past. Am I becoming more adaptable, more detail-oriented instead of change-oriented? Quite possibly. We are not as aware of our own change as we’d need to, I think.

This week I’ve been giving a good sorting and cleaning to my sewing supplies: since we make so many different crafts, we get to Disaster Craft Zone very often. I realized that I had kept them in ugly shoe boxes, very much since I started sewing, so I took the dumpster tin booty that Fernando found on Imbolc and used them to keep most of the small supplies like threads, buttons, needles and such. While I was cleaning, I noticed I had my favourite needles and pins on an ugly, old and dirty plastic box, so I made this pincushion with a jam jar. The witchy sign? Three black pins, properly conjured as a protection – very much a Witch Bottle, but I don’t have to bury it anywhere.

My babies, enjoying the gorgeous afternoon weather.

As I said, nothing important.

Tea-dyed cross stitch fabric and (as called in Spanish, not sure if that is the English name) freeform Yugoslavian Stitch.
I’m learning to knit in diagonal – I started making some dishcloths with organic cotton, which is just as difficult as I had read it would be LOL… I’m making a ton of these as gifts this year, they’re incrediby soft, and I love to make useful things.

The picture below is more diagonal knitting practise using scrap yarns – it will make a really warm shawl for next winter.

The day rose sunny and warm, so we started it with a good garden cleaning. We pruned the catnip, which grows so well here that it was choking with overgrowth; we discovered a wasp nest under the roof of the shed; we made cuttings of catnip and the rose geranium and repotted the plantain onto a bigger pot, and generally cleaned all pots of dry leaves, debris and weeds. We only kill the very useless weeds, and even those are not completely useless as they go to a drying bin where they will become the foundation of fire on our little grill, which we use both for food and ritual purposes. Nothing is discarded on our little garden! Tiny as it is, it holds more and more life every day.

Rosemary, geraniums, dragon’s blood trees and castor oil – and Oggun, of course.

Aloes, geranums, carthamus, passion flower, rue, wormwood, air carnation, catnip, spearmint, epazote, three types of basil and a few more I’m forgetting right now :).

Poinsettia, more spearmint, plantain, sage, pot marigold, red valerian, more basil.

A few months ago, my dearest Ms. Graveyard Dirt sent me two offsprings of her rose geranium, as they do not grow here – one of them survived and it’s almost a metre tall now! Here are some pretty details:

Sage is blooming – hopefully we’ll have seeds soon!

And, against all odds, the poinsettia plant which was almost dead is not only growing but also blooming in full! Their blooming time is around November, but hey, this is a magick garden after all…

Bits Of Magick

Datura Stramonium Seed Pods, wildharvested yesterday while picnicking with my brother and his lovely girlfriend at the San Felipe ravine.

Chocolate cake and carved fruit, made for Eleggua by Fernando.

Candle work for a new lovely customer.

The week starts with a great urge to go into the wild – after a few weeks of rain and chilly weather, yesterday we went out to the north of the island and enjoyed the day out tremendously. Everything was so green and sensual, and the San Felipe ravine was filled with life – blossoming daturas, wormwood and amaranth, bees, butterflies, lizards and birds…and lots of tourists LOL. Looking forward to visit more places this week!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who has sent good energy to our little babies – they are perfectly fine and healing as well as it is expected. There will be a couple of days of extra care for them yet, specially with the female one, but we will be here for your questions and orders as usual :).

Love spell for a customer, made last night. I wish I only had to do this type of spell! Nothing fills the house with energy as them.

Last week I exchanged some herbs for a python’s shed skin (not the leather) with a fellow Etsy seller – snakes are not a natural animal here, so it is not easy to find them. It was a treat for Eleggua and Baron Samedi, so making a special box for it was in order! We are already working on a prototype to make smaller versions for the shop.

Two of my cats are being neutered today, so this Witch has to be a good mommy and stay offline today taking care of her babies. I’m leaving you with some pics of Eleggua’s new altar until tomorrow – enjoy!
