This week we’re flooded with consultations, spells, listings and preparing the second anniversary giveaway – not much time left to write substantial posts, but lots of beautiful pictures to inspire you!

Love spell – the Spirits are really talkative these days, they whispered the recipe for a new fantastic incense that soon we’ll have available at the shop – as soon as I have time to make it lol.

Angelic healing spell – I have been working with angels quite a bit recently, and all I can say is I want more. I am quite sure I am about to start painting them as soon as I have a little less to do.

Cascarilla

Cascarilla is made mainly of powdered eggshells, magickal oils, blessed water and several other magickal items. It is used to bless and clean any sacred item, the altar and your consultants. Rubbing it softly against the skin, it cleans away negativity and prepares your aural energy before ritual work. Rub your doors and windows to clean and protect your house; crumbled, can be added to floor washes, protection waters, etc. We have added our extra touch by perfuming it with a white musk oil perfume, which smells fresh and invigorating, like a baby cologne. Each piece, in the dome-like traditional shape, comes wrapped in a beautiful silver tissue paper.
Fake cascarilla is usually made with plaster – you can tell because is much whiter than ours and leaves a clear mark like a chalk in your skin; that is not how it’s supposed to be!
The Three Venezuelan Powers Holy Card

The three more powerful Orishas of Venezuelan Spritualism – Negro Felipe, Maria Lionza and Guaicaipuro. This magickal trinity represents the main three races of Venezuela (black, white and indigenous):
- Negro Felipe is known for his wisdom, generosity and patience, and brings peace and harmony to the house;
- Maria Lionza is known to bring love and wealth to her followers, and is queen of nature;
- Guaicaipuro brings courage, empowerment and truth; he is the greatest warrior and protects against all evil.
The card measures approx 4×7 cms cms, a bit smaller than a business card. Use it to build a mini altar, keep it in your wallet, your car or anywhere where you need her protection. Laminated on both sides.
How Our Products Are Born
Posted in Book Of Shadows, Everyday Life, Santeria, The Slow Life on March 25, 2011 | 3 Comments »
A few nights ago we were working on new items for the shop, and I noticed there aren’t many posts on this blog the process of creating the items we offer; to be honest, when I’m creating I’m too absorbed by its power to remember to take pictures at all.
Most of our products come from the desire to offer a handmade alternative to mass-made Botanica products – I have worked at several local botanicas myself and believe me, most of what you can buy is not handmade and I wouldn’t use it myself. I research each product, look for natural correspondences, create a test batch, try it and then make a bigger amount for the shop if the products works quickly and efficiently. If not, I go back to the beginning and start again until I get what I want.
But sometimes, ideas come from Spirits themselves – they suggest the things I should put together during meditation, while I sleep or simply when I’m doing something completely mundane; I have to say that this products always work like… well, magick.

This was the case. Those readers who have been with us for a longer time will remember some cochineal* we wildharvested at Anaga two years ago – here’s a pic of it. We cleaned it, dried it, placed it in a pretty jar and it has been sitting quietly on our pantry since then. We intended to use it for dyeing fabrics and wool, since cochineal is the origin of true carmine, but we’ve simply haven’t found the time for it. Cochineal dyeing is one of the oldest traditions in the Canary Islands.
A few nights ago, I was bagging some herbs for an order and I felt the presence of one of my Guardian Spirits – I stopped what I was doing, centered and focused, ready to receive any message; I got instructions for three new concoctions. Even though we don’t keep a big stock of anything, we had exactly what was needed to make all three. Two of them used dried cochineal as a dyeying agent – and wow it did increase its magick! We are already planned to go and harvest more as I will be using it in most love products from now on. I made a new love oil, a rose-scented water that is used like Agua Florida, and the transparent one is a water for Saint Michael, as part of a full line devoted to angelic magick, a part of Santeria we haven’t worked in before, mostly due to lack of time.

The three bottles are now being consecrated at the altar, where they will receive daily blessings for their specific intents. After a week or so (each bottle has different needs), they will be ready to be bottled and sold.
And that is how magick gets to you!
*A note for our vegetarian friends – cochineal is harvested dead! We don’t kill animals to make our products :). We found a dead colony by chance in the mountains of Anaga.
Jewelry Shop Change, And Our Second Etsyversary!
Posted in Handmade OOAK Jewelry, House Of Eleggua on March 24, 2011 | 5 Comments »

Our jewelry shop, which has been quite abandoned in the last months, has been through a transformation – we have changed the name from Velvet Soul Jewelry to Sangre De Drago (spanish for Dragon’s Blood); the web address is the same, so no need to update bookmarks! From now on, we will focus on devotional jewelry only – it’s been the one that has sold better, something natural considering most of our customers come from The Hoodoo Shop. Right now I’m working on moving the few jewelry items that were listed at The Hoodoo Shop, and we are already preparing a regular inventory to be listed. We will keep you updated!
Today is our second Etsy Anniversary! I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all our patrons, customers, blog readers, and to everyone who featured our shop online – we wouldn’t be here without you!!! Hopefully next week we’ll have our giveaway ready to make a proper celebration :).
New Orisha Bottle Charms Listed
Posted in House Of Eleggua, Talismans / Amulets / Charms, Tools Of The Craft on March 23, 2011 | 1 Comment »

Charm bottles, also known as charm flasks/witch bottles, are a very important amulet in most Witchcraft traditions – filled with seeds, barks, roots, gemstones, minerals and a carrier oil/alcohol, they are made to protect and increase positive energy and repel and banish negativity. In Hoodoo, Santeria and Voodoo, they are also offerings for the altar, made to receive the blessings of an Orisha/Loa.

These bottles we are offering have been filled with all kind of witchy goodness and preserved in Eleggua’s honey rum and my personal Protection Oil; we have sealed them with our organic beeswax and adorned them with my own paintings, micro rhinestones and silk thread. They are made for protecting your home, your wealth, your family, etc – each Orisha carries a specific purpose:
Pomba Gira – protects relationships and women in business; placed under the bed, stimulates sexual life and romanticism.
Eleggua – opens paths, attracts luck and opportunities; placed behind the front door, keeps enemies away.
Shango – helps in court cases and against any form of injustice and negative magick; for maximum power, place it near musical instruments or where music is played regularly.
Saint Expedite – quick help in case of desperate/blocked situations; place him near your money, as money/work issues are his most requested petitions.
Oya – protects relationships with ancestors and women in business; place her in your shop or take her to your fairs and exhibitions, as she is queen of the marketplace.

Other uses we suggest are:
- Place them in your altar as an offering to your deity;
- Keep it in your purse as a protection amulet (padded pouch or box recommended; we have glued the caps before sealing them with beeswax, but they can break);
- Give them as a gift for someone in need of help (and double your good karma!);
- Bury them in your backyard, under the house or even in a flower pot for a conspicuous use;
- Use them instead of a statue to create a mini-altar anywhere; just add a candle, some incense or water – instant sacred space.

We are offering them in two sizes; obviously, the bigger bottle allowed us to add more ingredients. Each bottle contains:
- Protection Oil, from my own brew of course, and honey rum, a type of rum made of sugar cane, made in the Canary islands only.
- A Huayruro seed – traditional Central American amulet, also called “peonías”.
- Antique gold leaf – gold attracts wealth and repels negativity.
- Wormwood – from our own garden; to enhance psychic work.
- A piece of coconut shell, blessed by Eleggua – to open paths and bring luck.
- A chip of hematite – for grounding energy.
- A Cardamom pod – brings luck in love matters.
- multicoloured glitter – I use it in all my spellwork as an enhancer.
Besides all that, the bigger ones also contain:
- A chip of amethyst – to enhance crossing worlds.
- A chip of fluorite – to manifest dreams.
- An iron nail – to fight enemies.
- A Balm Of Gilead pod – to attract angels.
- A Castor Oil plant seed – to break evil magick.
- Rue – from our own garden; to repel evil magick.
- Sage – from our own garden; to increase protection.
- An African Wish Bean – to manifest wishes.
They are listed separately at The Hoodoo Shop.
